The Family Education and Privacy Act of 1974, commonly known as FERPA, was enacted by Congress to protect the privacy of student educational records. Any record that contains personally identifiable information that is directly related to the student is considered an educational record under FERPA. Students have specific, protected rights regarding the release of such records and FERPA requires that institutions adhere strictly to these guidelines. Therefore, it is imperative that any individual in possession of such records have complete knowledge of FERPA guidelines and maintain the integrity of these records. Strict confidentiality of all such records is critical to protect the personal information of the student.
